Bone Deep was a really sweet little romance story. Romance novels are sometimes difficult for me to get into but I really enjoyed this one and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes the genre.
This is the story of Sarah, a young war widow. Her husband was killed in action about a year and a half prior to the beginning of book and Sarah has withdrawn into herself. She focuses all her energy on maintaining her late husband's farm and has little time or inclination for anything else. She goes through the motions but life has very little meaning to her anymore.
This all changes when her friends drag her out to the travelling carnival that has set up near her small town for a few nights. It is here that she first sees Tom, one of the carnival's attractions, a young man covered head-to-toe in tattoos. Sarah cannot drag her eyes away from this man and when she returns home later that evening he is still in her thoughts.
The next morning, Sarah finds this alluring, tattooed man hiding in her barn. He has run away from the carnival, trying to escape a lifetime of abuse and misery. Sarah offers Tom a place to stay in exchange for his help doing odd-jobs around the farm. Although Sarah realises what a compromising position she has put herself in, she cannot help but feel sympathy for Tom and a bond soon develops between them, blossoming into love.
However, the pair soon face censure from the people in the town when they discover Sarah has taken in Tom. People who were once friendly turn their backs and reject Sarah. Tom they see as a freak and are quick to condemn him. This is further exacerbated when the young daughter of one of Sarah's neighbours goes missing. Tom has unusual psychic gifts and he uses these gifts to track down and save the girl. This earns him gratitude from some of the community but the majority are still small-minded and prejudiced and do everything they can to drive him out of town. There is also the cruel carnival owner to contend with who will do anything in his power to have Tom back under his control. Sarah and Tom have many adversities to face but can their love withstand all the obstacles in their path?
I really loved the main characters in this. Sarah was a strong and noble heroine. She could look past the surface and see the gentle soul behind the myriad of body art. Tom was adorable and his devotion to Sarah was heart-warming and sweet. I was really rooting for the pair and wanted them to get their happily ever after.
